Burkina Faso : recognises the role of traditional chiefdom
During the Council of Ministers on February 12, Burkina Faso decided to regulate “one of the oldest institutions in our history,” granting the country’s customary and traditional chieftaincy a defined role and function, integrated into the national legal framework. The text prohibits self-proclamation, excludes any remuneration, and requires chiefs to resign if they wish to engage in politics. The transitional government believes that this revaluation will help unite the population and strengthen peace.
