SADC – EAC : Summit on DRC

The East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) held a brief joint summit in Tanzania on February 8 as the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) escalated.

Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, who did not attend in person, and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, accused of fueling the conflict, did not deliver speeches. In a joint statement, the leaders urged security chiefs to develop a roadmap for peace, calling for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire and cessation of hostilities.”

The summit emphasized that political and diplomatic engagement remains the most sustainable solution to the crisis. It also directed that mechanisms be established to facilitate the withdrawal of uninvited foreign armed forces from DRC territory.
